This has made such a huge difference for me with meal planning. I created a chart with the days of the week and assigned each day a breakfast food that our family enjoys. I then put in fairly broad categories for dinner. In another row under each category, I listed different foods that fall under that category. Here is what my chart looks like. As I come up with new meal ideas, I file them under the correct day. Then before we go shopping, I highlight the items we will be eating that week and make my list from there.
| Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday |
Breakfast | French Toast | Waffles | French Toast | Pancakes | Waffles | Pancakes | Sticky buns |
Dinner | Pasta | Mexican | Rice | Grill | Pie | Crockpot | Roast |
| Ravioli Spaghetti Mac and Cheese Lasagna Park Slope Penne Penne with sausage and broccoli | Tacos Enchiladas Nachos Taco salad | Stir-fry Casserole African Peanut Stew Risotto | Hotdogs Sausages Hamburgers Chicken London Broil | Pot Pie Shepherd’s pie Pizza | Stew Fig Chicken White Chili | Pork Roast Baked Chicken Pot Roast Pork chops |
I love that this gives a rhythm and a predictability to our meals without becoming too restrictive! It meets the need of my very phlegmatic husband to know a general idea of what his meals are going to be each day, and and gives my sanguine side the ability to try new things and change it up. Also, because we all have pretty different tastes, it allows me to make sure that everyone is getting at least a few meals a week that they really like.
I have also found that when I have an idea that for instance "Tuesday is Mexican night", I manage to get dinner started earlier in the day and have it ready for dinner time at 6:00 PM which otherwise seems to be a goal that only sometimes happens as we get busy with other things throughout the day.
Will you share your recipe for white chili? I don't have a good one and would love to eat it regularly. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHa Ha! If I had an exact recipe for that I'd be happy to share it. I can tell you the basics though. As with almost everything we eat, I start with onions, celery, carrots and lots of garlic sauteeing in a dutch oven. I then add some sort of ground poultry (either chicken or turkey depending on what's on hand) and brown that. Then I add corn, some sort of white beans, whatever other veggies we have on hand, broth and season with cumin, chili powder and salt to taste. I bring it to a boil and let it simmer a while. I usually serve this with some plain yogurt dolloped on top instead of sour cream. Hope that helps. Sorry it's not exact. I don't use actual recipes all that often.
ReplyDeleteYes, I started too after that interview! It does make things so much easier :) Our Mexican day is now (randomly) Saturday and Italian is Friday...other than that my other days have different titles than what you've got. Well done! It's so cool...I have Indian day tomorrow :) :) --Tiff
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you have an " idea" to work with, cheers Marie
ReplyDeleteTiffany, I so wish we could have "Indian Day" at our house....but my husband won't eat Indian food. It's a shame since one of my good friends here has taught me so much about Indian cooking. Maybe "Indian Day" should be whenever we know Daddy won't be home for dinner (but that hardly ever happens). I think though, that, that's the beauty of this system....come up with categories that work for your family!
ReplyDeleteHey Erica! I work with your hubby and he has been chatting up you and your sweet little one to no end! I was telling him about my crafts and my blog and he said you had one too! I love it!!! I am your newest follower and can't wait to see what you come up with next! (And, I'm so jealous you have the hang of the meal planning thing! I still aimlessly wander around the grocery store and buy too much!!)

Cat,
ReplyDeleteGlad you're here! I've been enjoying looking at your blog too! I hope to have some new things up next week and get into a new blogging rhythm too. This week I've just been focusing on getting our family back to normal after a chaotic couple of weeks and our vacation.
